Why Crawling Matters

Why Crawling — Especially Cross-Crawling — Matters More Than You Think

When it comes to a baby’s motor milestones, crawling is vital to optimal neuromotor development. It’s a crucial part of how babies build the neurological groundwork for coordination, brain function, and a well-regulated nervous system.

Cross-crawling in particular happens when a baby moves opposite limbs together—like the right arm with the left leg, and vice versa and is the ideal movement pattern for crawling.

This movement helps develop:

  • Communication between the brain’s hemispheres

  • Coordination and balance

  • Fine motor control

  • Visual-motor integration (like hand-eye coordination)

  • Readiness for academic skills like reading and writing

How Chiropractic Care Can Help

Chiropractors focus on supporting the nervous system, and for babies, that often means making sure the spine is moving well and free from restrictions that might impact motor development.

If a child had a tough delivery, doesn’t enjoy tummy time, or skipped crawling altogether, their nervous system might benefit from a little extra support. Gentle chiropractic adjustments for infants can help:

  • Increase mobility in the spine

  • Promote better brain-body communication

  • Ease tension that could be limiting movement

  • Encourage reflex development and integration

What If My Baby Didn’t Crawl?

No need to panic! If your baby has past the crawling stage or still seems a bit uncoordinated, there are ways to revisit those movement patterns. As paediatric chiropractors, we use cross-crawl exercises in addition to gentle spinal adjustments to help with reflex integration, improve coordination and overall brain-body function—no matter your child’s age.

Crawling might seem basic, but it’s actually a powerhouse for brain development. The repetitive, diagonal motion of cross-crawling lays the groundwork for future learning, sports, and life skills. If you’re curious about your child’s development or just want to support their nervous system health, chiropractic care could be a great addition to their wellness plan.
