Chronic Constipation and Chiropractic

What is Constipation?

Constipation is a prevalent digestive issue that affects millions of people worldwide. It's characterized by infrequent bowel movements, difficulty passing stools, and often, a persistent feeling of bloating. While it can be an occasional inconvenience for some, chronic constipation can significantly impact one's quality of life. Here, we shed light on constipation and explore how chiropractic care can offer relief.

The nervous system plays a pivotal role in regulating bodily functions, including digestion. It controls and coordinates everything from your heartbeat to the movements of your digestive tract. Any interference with the nervous system's functioning can lead to various health issues, including constipation.

Structural shifts in the spine can occur over time due to various factors, such as poor posture, injury, or stress. These shifts can obstruct the nerves responsible for maintaining smooth digestion. Chiropractors specialize in identifying and correcting structural shifts, which can improve nerve supply and function.

Chiropractic care offers a holistic and natural approach to addressing constipation by targeting the root cause misalignments that obstruct nerves responsible for digestive function. Here's how it works.

Using specialized techniques, chiropractors apply adjustments to correct structural shifts. These adjustments aim to realign the spine, reducing the pressure on the nerves and restoring proper nerve function.

In many cases, patients who receive chiropractic care for constipation experience remarkable improvements. Misalignment correction can lead to the resolution of constipation, with patients reporting more regular and comfortable bowel movements.

By removing structural shifts chiropractic care enhances nerve supply and function. This can lead to not only relief from constipation but also improved overall well-being.

Constipation can be a persistent and distressing condition, but chiropractic care offers a promising avenue for relief. By addressing structural shifts and restoring proper nerve function, chiropractors help patients achieve a healthier and more comfortable digestive system.

Chiropractic Helps Woman Suffering from Constipation

The woman reported on in the study had been suffering from constipation for eight months. Her bowel movements were infrequent and hard to pass. She constantly felt bloated. She took over the counter medication which did not offer much relief. Her physician did a rectal exam, colonoscopy, and abdominal x-ray and upon receiving negative results for pathology, she was told to increase her dietary fiber and fluid intake.

The chiropractor examined her and found structural shifts in her neck, upper back, and sacrum. Tight muscles and restricted range of motion were noted. These structural shifts can lead to obstruction of the nerves and it is this obstruction that chiropractors correct.

Following chiropractic adjustments, she experienced complete resolution of constipation and experienced a bowel movement daily.

The study’s author called for additional research to investigate the clinical implications of chiropractic in adults with chronic constipation.
