I don’t know about you, but growing up in my house, microwave popcorn was a staple. It was quick, convenient, and everyone liked it, not to mention the delicious smell that enveloped the whole house!
A few years ago, we decided to stop eating it because, although convenient and tasty, this stuff is horrible for your health. And here’s why…
The bag: The bag is lined with perfluorooctanioc acid (PFOA). This is the same toxic chemical found in teflon pans. It can stay in the environment and in the human body for long periods of time and has been linked to infertility and cancer. The EPA lists this substance as a carcinogen.
Ingredients: The ingredients contain GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms). GMOs have never been tested for their long term effects on human beings but can be linked to many diseases. Aside from GMOS, this popcorn also contains trans fat. Trans fat is considered to be the most deadly fat available, it is associated with over 20,000 heart attacks per year and over 7,000 deaths (according to the CDC).
The hidden ingredients: Have you even wondered what natural flavours and artificial flavours means? This is a company’s way of hiding things in our food such as MSG (monosodium glutamate), beaver’s anal glands (yuck!) and artificial butter flavouring. Artificial butter flavouring has been linked to lung issues and brain issues such as Alzheimer’s disease (according to Dr. Mercola).
Although microwave popcorn is convenient, making your own is fast, cheaper in the long run, and can be a fun activity to do with kids
Healthy Alternative: Make Your Own -It only takes 5 minutes!
In a pot, melt 2 tablespoons of coconut oil (great for your metabolism) over medium heat. Once melted, add 1/4 cup dry organic popcorn kernels (non-GMO).
Cover the pot with a lid and let the popcorn pop, shaking the pot occassionally. Once the popcorn is done popping, remove it from the pot and into a bowl. Top popcorn with sea salt and enjoy!
